The title comes from an American poet Christopher Morley, which I heard in Morgan Housel’s podcast episode “Do It Your Own Way” released on the 28th of September. It’s a short but thoughtful episode and I suggest everyone to listen to it.
What if you didn’t even know about other people’s goals
The ultimate goal should be to live your life the way you want and manage your money the way you find it most effective for yourself. It doesn’t matter what the so called experts say, that is to become a homeowner asap by getting a mortgage and then save money in an index fund until you retire. You can do that, nothing wrong with it, but there are other ways. Is this what you want yourself? Personally, I’m so glad I’ve had the willpower from early on to do things my own way and not mess up by following others. So it’s a good reminder for myself, but a wake up call to readers who’ve been blindly following others to find happiness in life. You can’t even be sure if these people are really happy themselves. I think people in general are afraid of being different, so they do what they see everyone else around them doing cause it feels the right thing to do. If you then go and do something different that the society sees as awkward or risky, folks around you may even try to talk you out of it by human nature. Stepping out of the matrix and not being concerned about it is a superpower. This applies to both, investing and life in general.
Thailand has been good to me
I started to think globally in my early 20s, when I explored international business opportunities online. I come from a small country with only 1 million fellow citizens who speak the native language. Travelling has shown to me how many different places, cultures and fun opportunities the world has to offer. Even though I love my home country, I like to work and live my life without borders.
This autumn brought me to Thailand. I was in Bangkok for a week with a friend, where we explored around, met another friend from school who’s living there, and went to a fight night in a place that’s claimed to be the oldest Muay Thai stadium. What a great show! Next, we had planned a 2-week retreat at a Muay Thai camp in the northern part of Thailand. It was truly an awesome experience. The boxing classes were effective for the whole body, we had massages every other day for recovery, good food and amazing people. We met so many people from all over the world and had much fun. Now, sitting in my hotel in Chiang Mai while I’m writing this, I’m having a relax after the camp. I’ll be here for a week and then fly back to Bangkok, where I’m going to stay til Christmas.
Having been here only for a few weeks it feels like a lifetime, cause there’s been so much going on, new friends and a lot of fun experiences. That’s what I mean by living life in my own way. And the journey continues.
